11 Nov 2020
It was November 22, 1963 we were on a class fieldtrip to the Vista cinema in Barbados when a flash came across the giant screen that the American president was killed in Dallas, Texas. Even at that age it was stunning to us, America being in North America is a part of us, we felt the pain. Over the years we have seen political decline in the world but we always looked to America; thus now its so difficult to understand, its sad, unpatriotic, and reckless as we see democracy falling to the political egos of those who no longer treasure democracy.
The church can do nothing but keep steady in our prayers. Generations will wonder what happened in 2020; we pray they will grow never to let this happen again. Unlike most countries when a leader is elected they take office the same day but in America 77 days in the transition comes but this is now a nightmare as the will of the people is not respected.
The ACW stands with the will of the American people, the wonderful, loving people and whomever is elected to office to honor their will. The 47 countries in Europe is shaking their heads in wonder WHAT HAPPENED?
In this I repair to the words of William Williams:
“Guide me, O thou great Redeemer
Pilgrim though this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty; hold me with thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more.
Opinions will differ and many thoughts will be shared but as our forefathers lived and died for this democracy never let us lose sight of the vision they Gave.
Hear Williams one last time:
Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through;
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, be thou still my Strength and Shield,
Ever faithful,
Hartley, Presiding Bishop ACW
